Dr. Nil Lodh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, has received a $3,000 award to help fund his research project “Molecular diagnosis of multi Schistosome parasites from filtered urine from school children in Zambia." The project includes Marquette undergraduate students Steven Charles Krenzke; Austin Cyrs; El Shaimaa Mohamed Elmansour Mahmoud; Megan Jane Hessler. These students will present their findings at the American Society for Microbiology 2017 annual meeting this June in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The research project aims to create a simple, effective way to test children for Schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is one of the major neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), with more than 200 million people infected and close to 800 million at risk. In sub Saharan Africa two major human schistosomes namely Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium often occur sympatrically largely affecting children. In the age group of 6 – 15 year's infection prevalence and intensity peaks, which impacts the growth delays, delayed cognition, attention deficit, poor performance in school and a negative effect on the overall growth and quality of a child's life. Recognizing the public health impact of Schistosomiasis, the World Health Organization (WHO) is urging member states to regularly treat at least 75% and up to 100%, of all school-aged children at risk of morbidity.
Each year, The Office of International Education announces a call for submissions for the International Research Poster Session. Held in conjunction with the Forward Thinking Poster Session and Colloquy sponsored by ORSP, this event is held annually in the fall. Along with supporting promising international research, the overall aim of the poster session is to encourage and showcase international research among faculty members from all disciplines. One project presented at the poster session will be awarded a $3,000 Marquette International Research Award by a peer review panel.
