Dr. Scott C. D’Urso serves as acting vice provost for graduate and professional studies and dean of the Graduate School at Marquette University. An associate professor of communication studies, he previously served as associate dean for academic affairs and student development in the Graduate School. In that role, he established and continues to lead the Graduate Student Success Team.

D’Urso joined Marquette in 2004 as a faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies. He served as department chair from 2014 to 2022 and also held a concurrent appointment as chair of Strategic Communication from 2021 to 2022. His university service includes leadership roles as chair of the Committee on Academic Technology and vice chair of the University Board of Graduate Studies.

A dedicated educator, D’Urso has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in communication. He was the founding co-director of the Communication Leadership program in the Diederich College of Communication. His contributions have been recognized with Dean’s Recognition Awards for service (2014), faculty advising (2008 and 2013), and research excellence (2010).

D’Urso’s scholarly work focuses on the use of communication technologies across diverse organizational contexts, including corporations, non-profits, social groups and educational institutions, with a particular interest in spaceflight and space exploration organizations. He is an active member of the National Communication Association and the Council of Graduate Schools and serves on the editorial board of Management Communication Quarterly.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master of arts in communication from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a Ph.D. in organizational communication from the University of Texas at Austin.
