The Office of International Education is dedicated to continuously seeking and providing resources for LGBTQIA+ students preparing to study abroad. Countries worldwide have varying societal and political views regarding certain groups, including the LGBTQIA+ community. Understanding these cultural differences and potential legal implications can better prepare you for your study abroad experience. Coming out or expressing your LGBTQIA+ identity abroad may differ significantly from experiences in the U.S.
If you experience discrimination during your study abroad experience, know that support is available. Please complete the Emergency Response Form to report incidents and receive assistance through the Office of International Education.

The resources and information provided here are not intended to discourage LGBTQIA+ students from studying abroad but rather to empower you with knowledge to make the most of your journey.
Gender norms also vary widely, so it is important to research these before studying abroad. Learn the laws of your host country regarding LGBTQIA+ issues, such as same-sex sexual behavior and the visibility of LGBTQIA+ communities. It is important to remember that U.S. laws no longer apply or protect you while abroad. If same-sex acts are illegal in your host country, you could face arrest and imprisonment if reported. Explore available maps and resources on global LGBTQIA+ rights to better understand your destination. Beyond legality, assess whether the environment is affirming and inclusive toward LGBTQIA+ individuals.
