About the Center

Michael Zimmer and students in discussion regarding Center for Data, Ethics, and Society

Marquette University's Center for Data Ethics advances research, teaching, and public engagement on the ethical, social, and political implications of data and artificial intelligence in society.

Grounded in the university’s Jesuit mission and commitment to social justice, the Center examines pressing challenges including algorithmic bias and discrimination, the uneven impacts of automated decision-making, privacy and surveillance in datafied environments, the societal consequences of artificial intelligence, and questions of governance, accountability, and corporate responsibility in the technology sector.

The Center approaches these concerns through applied, interdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration with impacted communities, industry professionals, policymakers, and civil society. Its work spans empirical research, ethical analysis, curriculum development, and public dialogue—equipping students, researchers, and practitioners to navigate the complexities of data- and AI-driven systems with discernment and integrity.

Central to Marquette’s mission is an interdisciplinary learning environment that fosters meaningful research, ethical reflection, and service to the common good. In alignment with the university’s Beyond Boundaries strategic vision, the Center bridges disciplines, partners across sectors, and cultivates inclusive collaboration to ensure that data and AI systems promote dignity, justice, and human flourishing.

The center is directed by Dr. Michael Zimmer.
