About the Center

Michael Zimmer and students in discussion regarding Center for Data, Ethics, and Society

Grounded in the Jesuit mission of Marquette University and its commitment to social justice and the common good, the Center for Data Ethics advances research, teaching, and engagement focused on the ethical challenges of data- and AI-driven societies. The Center examines issues such as algorithmic bias and discrimination, the uneven impacts of automated decision-making, privacy and surveillance in datafied environments, the societal implications of artificial intelligence, and questions of corporate responsibility, governance, and accountability.

The Center serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration across Marquette and beyond, connecting scholars, students, and external partners working at the intersection of data, technology, ethics, and society. In alignment with Marquette’s 2031 Strategic Plan, the Center contributes to the university’s commitments to Thriving Students and Care for the World by advancing ethical reflection and collaboration around technologies that shape society.

Through applied, interdisciplinary scholarship and partnerships across academia, industry, and civil society, the Center works to ensure that data and AI systems promote human dignity, justice, and responsible innovation. The Center also develops courses, curriculum, and educational initiatives that prepare students and professionals to critically engage with the ethical and societal implications of data and artificial intelligence and to become thoughtful, responsible leaders in a data-driven world.

The Center is directed by Dr. Michael Zimmer.
