Dr. Hetzel, a native of Milwaukee, WI, joined Marquette’s psychology department in 2023 after more than 20 years as faculty in higher education. Outside of Marquette, she enjoys watching and researching classic films, pursuing the challenge of cooking (a work in progress), and participating in community activism.

Developmental Psychology, Psychology of Prejudice, Psychology of Gender, and Social Psychology

Research Interests

Dr. Hetzel’s research interests include the study of gender, gender identity, and sexual orientations, specifically how public perception and social policies can drive marginalization based on demographic intersectionality. Dr. Hetzel’s research is framed within a social psychological theoretical perspective.

Her research interests were further cultivated in her doctoral work in the School for Social Change at Walden University; Ph.D., 2006.

She is currently working on a comparative study of perceived life satisfaction of couples with children and childfree couples based on the respective couples’ gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientations.
