Continued Enrollment Policy
Continued enrollment in Core Honors in the University Honors Program is contingent upon students’ enrolling in the required courses in the Honors curriculum and earning a C or higher in CORE 1929H and HOPR 2953H. To graduate with an Honors degree (Core Honors), students must earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, complete the Honors curriculum, and earn a C or higher in all Honors courses. Disciplinary Honors programs have their own curricular and GPA requirements; for those, see the Undergraduate Bulletin.
The Policy
Student records will be reviewed at the end of every semester. Students who have taken non-Honors versions of required Honors courses (e.g. THEO 1001) will be assumed to have dropped the program and will be removed from Core Honors.
As anchors of the Honors curriculum that do not count toward majors or minors, CORE 1929H and HOPR 2956H have a special status. Core Honors students who have not earned a C or higher in CORE 1929H (preferably taken the first year) or HOPR 2956H (preferably taken the second year; it may not be taken the first year) will be removed from Core Honors. Students may repeat these courses for a higher grade even if they are no longer in Core Honors.
Students will not be removed from Core Honors for GPA reasons. A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required for graduation from Core Honors but not for continued enrollment. Usually students with a GPA lower than 2.0 are on academic probation in their colleges, and Honors collaborates in offering advising.
Student Right of Appeal: All students will have the right of appeal upon removal from Core Honors. The program recognizes that students sometimes have extenuating circumstances (illness, family emergency, changes in college or major, etc.) that cause them to earn lower grades or to be unable to take particular Honors courses. In most such cases students will be asked to repeat the relevant course for a C or higher, or to find a significant substitution for a required Honors course. To appeal, students should first fill out the Appeal for Removal from Core Honors form. An Honors advising meeting is required for all students appealing removal from Core Honors. Appeals are due by the end of the third week of the semester following removal.
