Raynor Library and the Center for Peacemaking invite you to participate in Banned Books Week 2025, Oct. 5-11, to celebrate the freedom to read and the importance of protecting free and open access to information.
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 6 to 8:30 p.m., Raynor 245
Banned Together: The Fight Against Censorship is an explosive story that exposes the powerful forces behind book bans and censorship in the U.S. The film features a diverse cast of visionary teenagers, stirring public protests, private threats, criminal charges, and drama-filled school board meetings. Join us to for a screening and discussion of the film.
Stop by the Banned Books Week table in the Ryanor Lobby for giveaways and activities relating to the importance of access to books and information. Also, in celebration of the diverse and impactful voices that create the literature we know and love, students from English 4747, "Banned Books," have selected examples of censored, banned, or challenged books for all to browse and borrow on the Raynor Bridge.
Held in the last week of September or first week of October, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas.
By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles lists of challenged books as reported in the media and submitted by librarians and teachers across the country.
