Advanced Education in Periodontics

Program Description

The Advanced Education in Periodontics program is a 36-month program that provides a Master’s and a Certificate in Periodontics. The program provides training in four areas: didactic, clinical, research and teaching and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. It also fulfills requirements for eligibility to the American Board of Periodontology.

Every periodontal resident must complete a minimum of 50 credit hours of course work, including 12 credit hours of clinical practice and six credit hours of thesis work. The remaining credits will be from courses assigned by the program director which are specific to periodontology.

Satisfactory completion of the didactic and clinical components of the program results in a specialty certificate through the Marquette University Graduate School. Satisfactory completion of the research component of the programs results in a Master’s degree through the Marquette University Graduate School. Completion of Master’s degree is a requirement for receipt of the specialty certificate.

Application Information

• Applications are accepted from May 1 through August 1 for admission the following academic year.
• Deadline for application is August 1
• Program starts on June 1 of the year following the application
• The program participates in the ADEA PASS application process
• The program participates in Post Doctoral National Matching Program (NMA MATCH)
• International students are accepted
• An online application is available on the Graduate School’s website. This application needs to be completed after NMS MATCH results and only by the selected candidates. 

Application Requirements

• An ADEA PASS application is required by all candidates.
• Official transcripts are necessary from all current and previous colleges/universities. International applicants must have course grades converted to numerical values of 4.000, 3.000, 2.000, and 1.000 or to corresponding letter grades of A, B, C, and D, respectively by the Educational Credential Evaluators Inc. (ECE). Where such a conversion is not possible, an explanation of the grading system used in the foreign dental school and undergraduate institution should accompany the official English translation of the grade transcripts.
• Undergraduate and dental school grade-point averages, and class rank in dental school are required.
• Three letters of recommendation reflecting the applicant’s clinical and academic abilities are required.
• Scores from the National Board Dental Examinations, Part I and Part II or the Integrated National Board Dental Examination are required only by graduates of U.S. or Canadian dental schools.
• A curriculum vitae is required.
• A personal statement describing why the applicant wishes to pursue periodontal education is required. 
• For international applicants only: a TOEFL or IELTS score are the only acceptable proofs of English proficiency. Minimally acceptable TOEFL and IELTS score is 95 and 7, respectively. "My Best" TOEFL scores are accepted but all test scores included must be valid within 2 years of the application deadline. 

Research

Graduation is dependent on receiving a master’s degree through the graduate school which involves an original research project and specified thesis requirements appropriate for this Master’s degree. Read more about Research at Marquette.

Program Director

Dr. Vrisiis Kofina, D.D.S., M.S. Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Director in Periodontics Dr. Kofina received her D.D.S. from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece and her M.S. and Certificate in Periodontics from The Ohio State University.  Dr. Kofina is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), the recipient of the 2021 Bud and Linda Tarson Fellowship from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation, an AAP LEAD alumna, a recipient of the 2021 AAP Award for Outstanding Teaching and mentoring in Periodontics, the co-chair of the In-Service Examination Committee, an ABP Qualifying Exam Item Writer, and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
