The Lovell Scholars Program
Marquette’s Lovell Scholars Program honors the legacy of Michael R. Lovell, the 24th President of Marquette University, by attracting and supporting students from across the nation with a record of the highest academic achievement and demonstrated leadership and service. The Lovell Scholarship offers full tuition plus housing and fees to four incoming students per year, in any undergraduate college at Marquette, for a total cohort of sixteen. Lovell Scholars are humble, open-minded, creative thinkers who aim to dedicate their lives to the common good. In accordance with the value Jesuit education places on knowledge in action, Scholars expand their academic horizons beyond the classroom, building their skills in leadership and collaborative problem-solving as they engage in research, discovery, and service for the benefit of others.
Scholar Selection
Scholars are selected through the freshman admissions process each year. How to apply
The Program Experience
- Each Scholar is paired with a faculty mentor, with whom they engage in co-curricular, experiential learning aimed at developing their natural curiosity and independence – most commonly in research or community-engaged projects. Scholars and faculty mentors meet regularly throughout each semester to help Scholars immerse themselves in their disciplines and identify opportunities to advance professional development goals.
- Scholars have the benefit of a small, supportive, multidisciplinary cohort. They meet bimonthly with the Lovell Scholars coordinator and participate in annual seminars on research, service, and discernment.
- As Scholars progress in their majors, they are mentored by the Lovell Scholars coordinator in finding and applying for both internal and external opportunities, including internships, research experiences on other campuses, and post-graduate prestigious fellowships.
- All Lovell Scholars are automatically admitted to the University Honors Program and receive one guaranteed Honors summer research or creative project fellowship as well as an Honors study-abroad award of $1000, if desired.
“When you give of yourself to help others, whether it be through your time, your talents, or your resources, a miracle happens. And that miracle is you get back more than you gave.” – President Michael R. Lovell
