EXHIBIT | Slavic Institute: Marquette's Cold-War Home for Exiled Scholars

From 1949 to 1967, Marquette’s Slavic Institute served as an academic refuge for Soviet Bloc scholars who fled repression and persecution in their home countries. The stories of these displaced scholars offer us a bridge between the historical struggles of the 20th century and the urgent global discourse of today.

This exhibit shares the uncomfortable and hidden stories of Ukrainians who have survived wartime sexual violence through a thousand-year-old Ukrainian tradition of embroidering life events on decorative and ritual cloth known as rushnyk.

Fifty years have passed since women at Marquette entered intercollegiate athletics. Women have played sports at Marquette for nearly as long as they have been admitted to the university. But the enactment of the federal Title IX statute opened doors to the competitive play for all of Marquette's athletes. Visit the exhibit that celebrates this achievement and the stories of female athletes who made their mark at Marquette.
