ReOrienting Migration: Memory, Justice & Belonging Research Community

ReOrienting Migration is an interdisciplinary research community that examines migration as a process of memory, identity formation, and justice making. Our work seeks to reorient migration studies by centering the lived experiences and narratives of displaced and diasporic communities, particularly those historically underrepresented in scholarship and public discourse.

Drawing on mixed methods research including oral histories, focus groups, surveys, and media analysis, the community brings together faculty, students, and community partners to explore how migration stories are told, remembered, and mobilized for belonging and social change. The initiative connects scholars across the humanities, social sciences, and communication fields, fostering dialogue between academic research and community-based knowledge.

Our mission is to create an inclusive, justice-driven space that bridges scholarship, teaching, and community engagement. We aim to:

  • Center the voices of immigrant and refugee communities through ethical, participatory research.
  • Foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty and students.
  • Train students in culturally grounded, trauma-informed research methods.
  • Build partnerships that amplify community memory, healing, and social advocacy.
  • Reimagine migration studies through decolonial, comparative, and justice-oriented frameworks.

We are actively building partnerships with local and regional organizations that represent diverse immigrant and refugee populations. Collaborations will focus on storytelling, cultural preservation, mental health awareness, and public education.

Faculty, staff, and students from all disciplines are invited to participate in co-developing projects that connect research, pedagogy, and public scholarship.

Our activities include workshops, digital storytelling projects, public exhibits, and collaborative publications that highlight the resilience and creativity of immigrant and refugee communities.

Stay tuned for upcoming activities!
